More than just the drum rolls and “sadsad” performances, the revival of “Pamukaw” 2020 last Saturday holds a deeper meaning for barangay-based tribes that will return in the upcoming Dinagyang 2020.
For the barangay tribes, performing in the Pamukaw again means fulfilling their “panaad” or devotion to Jesus Christ.
“This has a very special meaning for the barangay based. Isa ini ka panata nila nga magsug-alaw kay Jesus Christ in honor of Señor Santo Niño in the celebration of Dinagyang Festival,” City Tourism Operations Officer Florence King Erlano said in a press conference on Wednesday.
Pamukaw was staged on Saturday, two days before the Misa De Gallo tradition or “Simbang Gabi” of the Catholics.
Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI) tapped the barangay tribes for the revival of Pamukaw 2020 which signals the start of the Dinagyang season.
Before, the Pamukaw featured parade and sneak peak of the performances of the school-based tribes that compete in the Ati tribes competition.
On Saturday, nine barangay tribes performed simultaneously in district plazas and selected key areas in the city at the first drumbeat delivered by Mayor Jerry Treñas.
Tribu Molave performed at the Arevalo Plaza; Familia at Mandurriao Plaza; Tribu Parianon at the Molo Plaza; Tribu Kanyao at Jaro Plaza; Tribu Aninipay at Lapaz Plaza; Tribu Hamili & Tribu Sagasa at Plaza Libertad; Tribu Panaad at Sunburst Park; and Tribu Angola at SM City.
“It signals the start of our Dinagyang season. Gapamukaw kita sa aton Ilonggo community nga maghanda na para sa aton Dinagyang,” Erlano said.
The nine tribes performed “sadsad” performance as a sneak peak for the first ever, “Dagyang sa Calle Real” on January 25, 2020.
The tribes will bring back the usual merrymaking practice or “Dagyang” in a friendly competition.
Oscar Vijuan, tribe manager of Tribu Parianon, said they are all excited for the comeback of the barangay tribes.
“Mga eight to nine years nag-stop ang barangay tribes and very happy gid kami nga nakabalik kami maskin kapoy and challenging. Ang importante mapasadya namon sila,” he said.
Meanwhile Vijuan said they hope that the Pamukaw will encourage residents to join in their respective tribes and at the same time entice business establishments to sponsor the tribes.
“For those who are willing to sponsor the nine tribes we are very much willing gid,” he said.
