It’s a nostalgic feeling for the die-hard Gilas Pilipinas fans as some of the reliable veterans who once led the country in various international tournaments are making their return for the upcoming Asian Games.
Did you miss Terrence Romeo, Calvin Abueva, and Stanley Pringle?
During a practice session of the PHL national hoops team for the Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou, China, the trio were seen donning the practice jerseys of Gilas while listening to a pep talk by head coach Tim Cone.
The training session was held at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City and was also graced by some of the listed members of the roster released by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) four days ago.
Romeo, one of the best guards to ever wear the Gilas jersey, is coming off an injury-plagued season with the San Miguel Beermen and just started playing again during the PBA On Tour Preseason.
After shocking the world during the 2015 William Jones Cup, Romeo instantly rose to stardom and became a staple part of the Gilas national team.
His flashy crossovers and great ball-handling were poetry in motion during his heydays with the national team and helped Gilas boost their rank with several huge wins in the Asia Cup and the qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Abueva, the national team’s heart and soul during the 2015 FIBA Asia Cup, will also be making his return.
Known for his hustle and energy, coach Cone thinks he will need Abueva’s all-around game against the tough Asian squads for the Asian Games.
Pringle last appeared for the national team during the past two editions of the Asian Games and the SEA Games where the PHL clinched the gold medal.
After those stints, Pringle failed to make the cut due to naturalization issues and decided to become a part of Gilas’ 3×3 team during the SEA Games.
Aside from the trio, Moala Tautuaa and Jason Perkins were also present during the practice. Completing the cast are June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, Calvin Oftana, and Justin Brownlee.
