BACOLOD CITY – A small community of weavers from central Negros Occidental took center stage in the fashion world after collaborating with a local store.

The CHICKS x Get Spotted collection was launched at Citadines Bacolod in Barangay Bata on Wednesday, Sept. 11, showcasing meticulously crafted handmade textiles produced by the Negros 9 weavers of Kabankalan City.

Sixth District Rep. Mercedes Alvarez-Lansang explained that CHICKS stands for the six local government units (LGUs) under the district: Candoni, Hinoba-an, Ilog, Cauayan, Kabankalan, and Sipalay.

She added that CHICKS was a term coined by the military in the 1980s during the insurgency in the province.

However, the region has since redefined itself as a hub for sustainable tourism, white sand beaches, and more.
“I’ve always advocated for promoting our home wherever I go,” Lansang said.

Lansang thanked their partners for supporting peace in the area, especially in small upland communities.

She also expressed gratitude to Fr. Brian Gore, founder of Negros 9 Weavers, for bringing hope to these communities.

“Peace has reigned in these communities,” she added.

Established in 2012, Negros 9 Weavers began as a livelihood initiative, providing the weavers with a fair and reliable source of income.

Lansang emphasized that the collaboration aims to promote the CHICKS area and its local artisans.

She added that proceeds from sales will be used to purchase weaving equipment, encouraging more members of the community, especially the youth, to learn the craft.

“I hope we continue to support our local economy and local artists,” she said, thanking Get Spotted for the partnership.

Designer Emgee Po, speaking at the launch, said that each piece in the collection reflects the skill of Kabankalan’s weavers.

“We ensure these pieces are not only beautiful but also wearable in everyday life and available in all sizes,” Po said, noting that each piece embodies the beauty, strength, and craftsmanship of local artisans from the CHICKS area.

“We are here to make a statement that in a world dominated by fast fashion and mass production, we believe in the power of local craftsmanship, creating fashion with a purpose,” Po added.

She emphasized that supporting these artisans not only promotes the CHICKS community but also reduces the environmental footprint, as fashion can be both fun and sustainable.

“By wearing these clothes, you are preserving culture and helping empower communities,” she concluded.

The collection is available at the Get Spotted store in Ayala Malls Capitol Central and will also be showcased at the Negros Trade Fair in Manila from Sept. 17 to 22.
