The 120th anniversary celebration of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) in Western Visayas supported the greening efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through a bamboo planting activity on September 25, 2020.
Bamboo, a renewable resource that have impacted greatly in different parts of the world due to its economic and environmental value, is now the focus of the government’s greening initiative called the Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP) which is being implemented from 2016 until 2028.
CSC Regional Director Nelson G. Sarmiento stressed the need to collaborate with the DENR and take part in a tree planting activity to contribute in the preservation of nature. The activity was scheduled for the third week of the month.
Dubbed as Pag-Ulikid sa Dunang Manggad “A Tree Planting Activity” under the subtheme Linggo ng Malasakit, the bamboo planting was conducted at Brgy. Calajunan, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
Approximately 170 bamboo seedlings were planted by the CSC and DENR officials and employees alongside other national government agencies. In order to abide by the COVID-19 safety protocols, only a limited number of
volunteers were allowed to participate and everyone wore their facemask, face shield and observed social distancing
“We are planting bamboo today in connection to the 120th CSC Anniversary. But as you may have known, the month of September is also declared a Bamboo Month and we have observed September 18 as World Bamboo Day. This endeavor also supports DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu’s initiative to make Region 6 the “bamboo capital” in the country due to the many benefits we derived from it,” said regional executive director Francisco E.
