TAGUIG CITY—The Design Center of the Philippines, under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), is set to host the 8th International Design Conference today, Sept. 20, 2024, at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), with the theme “Design Beyond Desire.”
The flagship event will explore the critical role of design in addressing real-world problems and creating sustainable solutions, drawing in experts from the global and local design industry.
“This year’s conference will provide a platform for new thinking, innovative ideas, and radical collaborations to thrive in this brave new world,” said Rhea Matute, Executive Director of the DTI-Design Center.
The event is part of the month-long celebration of both Design Consciousness Week and Philippine Creative Industries Month, reinforcing the country’s commitment to design innovation.
Real-World Solutions Through Design
The conference will feature four Ignite Sessions led by global thought leaders, including Bhutan Gross National Happiness Centre Executive Director Lhatu, sustainability provocateur Dr. Leyla Acaroglu, Menarco Development Corporation CEO Carmen Jimenez-Ong, and renowned Philippine architect Royal Pineda.
These sessions will explore key topics such as:
- The pursuit of gross national well-being through design;
- Designing authentic identities for public spaces and communities;
- Creating a more inclusive, hyper-connected society through design;
- Embedding ethics, sustainability, and values into design practices.
Mylene Abiva, co-chair of the Design Advisory Council, emphasized the growing need for sustainable design practices: “It’s no longer about designing for aesthetics or luxury; it’s about designing for life, for the environment, and for future generations.”
Pioneering Change in Design Innovation
The International Design Conference aims to equip designers, businesses, and policymakers with the tools and insights necessary to address real-world challenges. By focusing on life-centered solutions, the event hopes to inspire transformative action.
“The International Design Conference is more than just a conference; it’s a catalyst for transformative action,” Matute noted, highlighting the impact of the discussions and collaborations that take place during the event.
As the Philippines strengthens its position as a hub for design innovation, the conference will be a key platform for knowledge sharing and networking among professionals, policymakers, students, and design businesses.
The event is free and open to the public, welcoming those interested in exploring how design can create a meaningful, equitable, and sustainable future.
