Residents of Sitio Tuburan, Barangay Igtambo in San Miguel, Iloilo, now have a new venue for their community activities, thanks to the completion of a multi-purpose covered court by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The project, valued at Php 4.94 million, was executed by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office.
DPWH 6 Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel emphasized the significance of the new structure, highlighting its role in fostering community spirit.
“This covered court will serve as a beacon of endless communal gatherings, fitness sessions, and shared laughter. It will provide residents with a better and more convenient venue for social, religious, political, health and wellness, and recreational activities in their barangay,” Oropel said.
In addition to its primary function as a venue for community events, Oropel noted the court’s potential use as a temporary evacuation center during emergencies.
“This may also serve as a temporary evacuation center, providing people with safer and more reliable shelter in times of calamities and disasters,” he added.
District Engineer Mario G. Soriano also highlighted the court’s versatility, suggesting that it could be used as a temporary storage facility for crops and agricultural products, particularly during the harvest season.
“Aside from being a conducive venue for social gatherings and barangay affairs, these structures may also serve as a temporary post-harvest facility where our farmers can temporarily place their crops and other agricultural products for safekeeping,” Soriano explained.
Soriano further underscored the benefits of the covered court, noting that it would protect residents from extreme weather conditions.
“The building will provide protection from the direct heat of the sun during sunny days or the rain and wind during rainy days. With a covered gym, individuals can exercise without fear of their workout being cut short due to inclement weather,” he said.
The construction of the multi-purpose court is part of DPWH’s ongoing efforts to improve public infrastructure in local communities.
By undertaking projects like this, DPWH aims to provide residents with safer and more functional spaces that enhance their quality of life.
