Iloilo was placed under a “blue alert” on Monday, September 16, in preparation for the intensified Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), which is being strengthened by Typhoon Gener and Tropical Storm Pulasan.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) instructed local government units (LGUs) to prepare personnel and resources for emergency response.
PDRRMO head, Retired Colonel Cornelio Salinas, urged LGUs to closely monitor the situation, as heavy rainfall and rising water levels are expected.
“We issued an advisory this afternoon, directing all member agencies of the PDRRMO to closely monitor the situation. Heavy rainfalls and rising water levels are expected, and agencies should consolidate relevant data to ensure immediate action by concerned agencies and LGUs,” Salinas said in an interview.
He also warned of heightened risks in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas.
Salinas referenced recent incidents, including a tornado in Zarraga, Iloilo, which damaged 29 homes, as well as storm surges and landslides in Iloilo’s first district.
He urged the public to follow advisories and prepare essentials in case of evacuation, stressing that preparedness is crucial for safety during these unpredictable weather events.
Salinas also advised travelers and drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed to prevent accidents.
As of writing, the formal declaration of the blue alert is still pending an Executive Order.
