Recognizing that senior citizens are an integral part of society, the Sangguniang Panlungsod during its special session on Thursday approved an ordinance granting additional cash incentives to senior citizens.

The ordinance which amended Ordinance 2017-053 which honors Ilonggo Centenarians, grants additional cash incentives of P10,000 upon reaching the age of 80 and P20,000 upon reaching the age of 90 years old and P50,000 cash incentives for elderlies who reach 100 years old.

All in all, an Ilonggo elderly will receive a total of P80,000 worth of cash incentives from the city government at the age of 100 years old, according to Councilor Irene Ong, proponent of the ordinance.

Ong reiterated that the ordinance has no retroactive effect.

“It will be an installment basis nga makuha lang nila kon makaedad sila 80 teh P10,000 dayon kon 90 may P20,000 sila kag P50,000 once ma-100 pa gid sila so halos P80,000 tanan,” the proponent said.

In his committee report, Councilor Jay Treñas III chairman of the Committee on Appropriations said that senior citizens should be able to enjoy their cash incentives while they are still strong.

“Reaching the age of 80 years old is very rare nowadays. Lowering the age bracket will ensure that our senior citizens receive the benefits while they are still strong and are able to enjoy their cash incentives,” he said.

Ensuring that all benefits intended for the senior citizens are given will contribute to their total improvement and their full participation in the city, Treñas added.

Aside from the P50,000 cash incentive from the city government, centenarians had been receiving P100,000 worth of cash incentives from the national government.

Data from the city government showed that there are 59,293 senior citizens registered in Iloilo City in 2018.
