The importance of the data visualization highlighted the 3-day training on “Infographics: IDeA of Data Visualization” (IDeA=Insights, Design and the Art) for the Provincial Statistics Committee Guimaras (PSC-Guimaras) members conducted by the West Visayas State University (WVSU)-College of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the College of Information and Communication Technology through their Research Extension Program on October 5-7, 2021.
“Data visualization is a type of modality that helps us see and understand the data, ideally in a way that led us to have quick insights and ideas, Dr. Regine Cabacas, ICT Faculty of WVSU stressed during his presentation on Infographics design principles (online and offline tools).
Dr. Cabacas also highlighted during his presentation that, data visualization can be a meaningful part of infographics, which with the additional storytelling can make the data visualization more actionable.
“Infographic (informal graphic) is a highly visual designed product that includes information, and that ideally tells a story of some kind,” Cabacas said.
“They can be short or long, and often including a variety of elements such as narratives, illustrations, icons, photos, and data visualization.”
The 3-day infographics training also tackled topics on Reviewing local data: Statistical analysis and data organization, presented by Cherry T. Nepomuceno; Effective data presentation, techniques: Types of Statistical charts and graphs and their uses and; Effective data presentation techniques: the dos and don’ts in the graphical presentation, presented by Genevieve P. Lachica. Both presenters were from the College of Arts and Sciences, Mathematics Department of WVSU.
“Infographics Design principles (online and offline tools), presented by Dr. Cabasa and Ma. Beth S. Conception, College Dean of ICT and; Lecture demonstration and workshop on infographic templates free download- Offline tools were presented by Dr. Cabacas, while Online tolls were presented by Shem Durst Elijah Sandig, ICT Faculty of WVSU”, Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
The 3-day infographic training is one of the activities designed and agreed upon by WVSU and PSC- Guimaras for the capacity development (CapDeV) programs of PSC members, the next series of training will focus on data management and data banking, scheduled next year.
The infographic training started with an opening program wherein the seventy-two registered participants (fifty-two from PSC Guimraras Members and Twenty 4th Year BS Applied Math students from WVSU) welcomed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Ma. Elfleda R. Ecobe.
“I encouraged the participants to actively participate in the discussion, to ask questions and grab the opportunity to discuss and clarify gray areas with the competent resource persons from the institution,” Ecobe said.

The training which covered matters on infographics design successfully concluded with a notable impression from the participants.
“Reaching the training’s goal of capacitating the PSC members on designing and releasing data most effectively and interestingly is a remarkable accomplishment not only for the WVSU but most especially for the PSC-Guimaras,” Losare said.
“Given that PSC is a Committee which primarily serves as the highest policy-making and coordinating arm of the Council on statistical matters in the province and shall institute measures to strengthen the capability of the local statistical system which include personnel, equipment, and other institutional support thus, this training contributed a lot for the development of our services to the public.”
