ISUFST Brings Career Expo to Fisheries High School

SAN JOAQUIN, Iloilo – The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) conducted its ICARE (ISUFST Career Adventure Expo) talk at the San Joaquin School of Fisheries (SJSOF) on March 4, 2025, as part of its ongoing career guidance initiative across the region.

This marked ISUFST’s 26th school visit, following engagements with 22 schools in 12 municipalities, reaching more than 7,000 students.

A total of 110 students attended the event, including graduating students from SJSOF and a section from the San Joaquin Farm School.

SJSOF is the only fisheries high school in Region 6, while ISUFST holds the distinction of being the only fisheries university in the Philippines.

The ICARE team included PAMMCO Director Herman Lagon, staff member Jose Eugene Salazar, guidance counselors Keziah Lagarto and psychometrician Dwight Deslate, along with SJSOF-ISUFST alumna Aivie Padohinog.

Dr. Lagon encouraged students to pursue academic paths that align with their strengths and aspirations.

He introduced the concept of “ikigai,” emphasizing the importance of choosing careers that ignite passion, ensure financial stability, and contribute to the community.

Lagarto and Deslate led career-interest and personality assessments, helping students explore potential career options.

Salazar and Padohinog also shared their career journeys, offering inspiration and insights.

Padohinog, a cum laude graduate of ISUFST, recently topped the board examination for fisheries technologists, while Salazar previously served as ISUFST’s student regent.

SJSOF Guidance Designate Daisy Monicimpo expressed gratitude for the initiative, emphasizing its role in shaping students’ future career decisions.

Principal RJ Sapalo highlighted the positive impact of the career talk on students’ aspirations and goals.

The two-hour event attracted not only fisheries students but also those interested in agriculture and ICT, underscoring the broad career opportunities available.

The ICARE program, a university-led initiative supported by the Office of the President, continues to expand its reach.

In collaboration with PAMMCO, the Guidance Office of the Student Support Center, and faculty-student-alumni volunteers, ISUFST aims to mentor and guide more students in shaping their educational and career paths.
