ISUFST Prepares PR Team for RSCUAA 2024

DINGLE, ILOILO—The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) Dingle Campus has launched its preparations for hosting the 2024 Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA).

ISUFST kicked off these efforts with the first leg of its PR Committee Orientation, Strategic Planning, and Training Workshop on November 5, 2024.

The workshop was held at the campus’ Audio-Visual Room.

It brought together 26 student journalists, faculty members, and volunteers from ISUFST’s publications, including The Clarion (Main Campus-Poblacion Site), Igang Publications (San Enrique Campus), and Golden Grains (Dingle Campus).

The workshop aimed to foster collaboration among campus journalists and equip them with skills in technology-assisted content creation, multi-platform publication, and media relations.

These skills are essential as ISUFST prepares to host the RSCUAA 2024 Sports Festival and Conference from December 15 to 20, 2024.

The event will be held under the theme “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports.”

Dr. Herman Lagon, chairperson of the PR Committee, led the sessions.

He presented key lessons in news, feature, and sports writing, photojournalism, cartooning, interviewing, layout design, and video editing.

“This training workshop is not only about honing our PR skills but about empowering student journalists to work together,” Dr. Lagon said.

“We’re committed to delivering timely, accurate, and engaging coverage to keep everyone informed and inspired by RSCUAA 2024,” he added.

Prof. Benjamin Cornelio Jr., chair of the PR Sub-Committee for Streamlining and Scoring Updates, highlighted the importance of understanding the audience.

“You need to know your audience,” he said during his session on editing and layout design.

Contributions from Instr. John Christian Salarza, Dr. Ram Eujohn Diamante, and Instr. Russel Yamit enriched the workshop.

These contributions equipped attendees with tools for comprehensive and impactful event coverage.

Participants engaged in practical exercises such as mock interviews, live sports coverage writing, and real-time photography.

These activities gave participants firsthand experience in handling high-energy sports reporting.

This immersive approach aims to ensure that the PR team is ready to capture the excitement of RSCUAA 2024.

The event marks a significant milestone for ISUFST as a first-time host.

Dingle Campus Administrator Dr. Dingras Balbona supported the workshop by sponsoring meals and accommodations.

Her support aligns with ISUFST President Dr. Nordy D. Siason, Jr.’s emphasis on dedication from all organizers.

Dr. Siason accepted the challenge of hosting just last month.

General Secretariat Chairperson Dr. Edmer D. Bernardo expressed full support for the initiative.

He encouraged organizers to create an exceptional experience for athletes, officials, and guests.

The second and concluding leg of the training will take place on November 8, 2024.

It will be held at the ISUFST Main Campus-Tiwi Site in Barotac Nuevo.

The session will involve The Sea Treasure (Main Campus-Tiwi Site) and The Blaze (Dumangas Campus) publications.

This session will further align the PR team’s strategies for cohesive RSCUAA 2024 coverage.

RSCUAA 2024 will feature 14 state universities from Panay, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental.

Competing sports include basketball, volleyball, athletics, football, badminton, swimming, and more.

The event will also have special segments such as the opening ceremony, parade of athletes, solidarity night, and LGU night.

These segments aim to highlight local culture.

This year’s competition is historically significant due to the newly ratified Negros Island Law.

The law may make this the last RSCUAA for participating schools from Negros.
