ISUFST sports complex breaks ground, Palaro hosting eyed

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) began construction of an Olympic-size sports complex at its Main Campus-Tiwi Site in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, on Thursday.

The groundbreaking ceremony drew local dignitaries, including 4th District of Iloilo Cong. Ferjenel Biron and Uswag Iloilo Cong. Jojo Ang, both pivotal in the project’s inception and funding. The new facility will include a 50-meter swimming pool, a 400-meter rubberized track, and a modernized basketball court, aimed at boosting the university’s sports and recreation capabilities.

In his address, ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason emphasized the complex’s broader mission. “This project is not just about physical structures but fostering excellence and community engagement,” Siason said, thanking both congressmen for their critical support.

Reflecting on the impact of legislative backing, Biron underscored the transformative power of sustained dedication.

“Without steadfast dedication over the past decade, transitioning ISCOF to ISUFST would have remained a vision unfulfilled,” he noted, highlighting the university’s unique role as the nation’s only fisheries university.

Moreover, Biron announced an additional allocation of P45 million to ensure the project meets the highest standards, reaffirming his commitment to accountability and sustainable development.

“Public office is a public trust, and we must uphold accountability in every action we take. Our efforts today reflect a commitment not only to present constituents but to future generations,” Biron added.

The legislator also detailed further support with Cong. Ang in July, including a P1 million donation from their salaries for new educational tools and audiovisual facilities to enhance the university’s educational capabilities.

Cong. Ang highlighted the significance of the sports complex for regional sports, noting, “We’re setting the stage for future Palarong Pambansa games right here in the Fourth District of Iloilo.”

The project, expected to complete within 250 calendar days, promises to bolster ISUFST’s position as a hub of education and athletic excellence in the region, with DPWH Chief Engr. Allan Rey Pajinma ensuring its timely and successful completion. (Text by Herman Lagon/Photos by Ricky Ramos, Herman Lagon, and TST/PAMCO)
