Not all business process outsourcing jobs are the same.

You’ve probably had a friend or two (or three!) work for a company doing customer care or customer service functions.  They make and receive calls to help customers with technical problems and general inquiries.  And you’d often find them in a flurry meeting deadlines and quotas. But what do call centers and BPOs (Business Process Outsourcing) companies do exactly?

Call centers offer three major services:

-Inbound Call Center Services

-Outbound Call Center Services

-Virtual Call Centers

Inbound Call Centers receive calls from customers.  Agents focus on helping customers who may have issues with products or services (tech problems, instructions, procedures).  Say, if your internet connection is intermittent, you can give your internet provider’s customer care a ring and get it fixed.  In addition to receiving calls, inbound call center agents often handle email response and chat support.

Outbound Call Centers call (rather than receive calls from) prospective customers or existing ones.   They can do sales, promotions, and customer surveys (among many other functions).

 Virtual call centers or cloud-based call centers are hybrids of inbound and outbound call centers that can operate anywhere. Set-up is fairly quick and easy with little need for special equipment.  Users just need a reliable internet connection, a computer, or a phone to access the service.  What makes it attractive is its ability to integrate with existing sales support systems or CRM tools.

These three types of call centers can be further divided into international or domestic call centers.  If your call center operates in the Philippines, your agents exclusively service Philippine-based clients.  International centers, as its name implies, receive and make calls to people around the globe.

Many call centers in the Philippines are cloud-based — given how global brands prefer Pinoys for the quality of service we provide.  And there are unique career benefits that only call centers can provide. Work experience isn’t a requirement for most.  If you’ve found yourself out of work, or if you’ve recently graduated (or in need of a job to fill in a pay gap), a call center is a great place to start.  Call center “graduates” often carve excellent career paths.  Many notable directors and regional managers at multinational firms call BPOs their first “homes”.  Perks include flexibility and pay.  BPOs like NEARSOL offer work from home opportunities.  Basic pay is higher compared to other industries.  Some positions even offer commissions.
