BACOLOD CITY — Negros Occidental, led by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, won the bid to host the 2027 International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) Organic World Congress (OWC) during a bidding held at Nanhua University in Taiwan.
The announcement was made Thursday through the official social media page of the provincial government.
Governor Lacson led the province’s delegation, which included mayors, farmers, and scholars, at the 2024 IFOAM Organic World Congress in Taiwan. La Castellana Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan, who was part of the delegation, shared that Negros Occidental secured 128 votes, defeating Brisbane, Australia, which garnered 92 votes.
Ahead of the bidding, Lacson expressed optimism about the province’s chances, citing support from Jennifer Chang of IFOAM Asia and Ramon Uy Jr., Slow Food International Councilor for Southeast Asia.
During the recent 17th Negros Island Organic Farmers Festival and 2nd Terra Madre Visayas at Negros Residences in Bacolod City, Lacson emphasized the importance of organic farming and the Slow Food movement in addressing the depletion of natural resources.
“By hosting the IFOAM Organic World Congress, we can showcase our achievements, share our knowledge, and learn from others who are equally passionate about organic farming. This will inspire others and encourage the adoption of organic practices worldwide,” Lacson said.
He highlighted that the initiatives promote sustainable agriculture, preserve biodiversity, and protect community health. He also noted that the Slow Food movement aligns with the province’s vision of a sustainable and equitable future.
“With its emphasis on clean and fair food, the Slow Food movement resonates with our shared goals. Through cooperation, dialogue, and education, we can foster stronger partnerships among stakeholders who share a passion for sustainable practices,” Lacson added.
Negros Occidental, along with Negros Oriental, has long been a leader in organic farming in the Philippines. The province’s commitment to sustainable agriculture has earned it the National Award for Top Performing Organic Agriculture Province.
Lacson pointed out that Negros Occidental is the first and only province in the country with Anti-GMO legislation and is home to the longest-running Annual Organic Farmers Festival, recognized by IFOAM.
The IFOAM Organic World Congress is one of the largest international events promoting sustainable farming and organic agriculture, drawing experts and advocates from around the world.
By hosting the event, Negros Occidental aims to further cement its role as a pioneer in sustainable agriculture and inspire global adoption of organic practices.
