A newly constructed multi-purpose covered gym is now serving the residents of Barangay Malublub in Leon, Iloilo, providing a reliable venue for community activities regardless of the weather.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) delivered the project to improve the lives of the people in this remote area.

The Php 4.94-million structure, built by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, measures 16 by 28 meters and includes 13 reinforced concrete columns, six roof spans, and electrical and painting works.

DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the gym would provide a safer and more convenient space for the community, especially for the youth’s sports development.

“This multi-purpose building offers a space for sports development and indoor community gatherings. The design accommodates all weather conditions, ensuring year-round usability,” Oropel said.

He added that the gym would also serve as a reliable evacuation center during calamities, offering residents a safer and more convenient shelter.

District Engineer Mario G. Soriano highlighted the structure’s broader benefits, noting that it could also serve as a temporary post-harvest facility where farmers can store crops and agricultural products during harvest season.

“This covered gym will not only support sports and community events but also contribute to the area’s economic development,” Soriano said. He emphasized that the facility provides a spacious and safe environment for social, religious, and recreational activities. (DPWH)
