Pneumonia is leading cause of death in Aklan

KALIBO, Aklan – Pneumonia was the leading cause of death in Aklan in 2019, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Data from PSA-Aklan showed that of the 4,129 reported deaths in the province in 2019, 634 or 15.3% were due to pneumonia.

321, or 51 percent, were females, while 313 or 49 percent were males.

The municipality of Numancia has the most number of cases with 79 or about 12.5 percent of the total, followed by Makato with 66 (10.4%), Ibajay and Kalibo with 59 (9.3%), respectively, and Batan with 51 (8.1%).

The rest of the municipalities shared about 7.4% percent and below of the cases.

Second to pneumonia is acute myocardial infarction with 415 (10%) reported cases, followed by hypertensive heart disease with 1,003 (5.5%), stroke not specified as hemorrhage or infarction with 762 (3.5%), and other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with 556 (3.2%).

Also included in the top ten causes of deaths in Aklan were respiratory tuberculosis with 114 (2.8%), other ill-defined and unspecified causes of mortality with 108 (2.6%), unspecified diabetes mellitus with 94 (2.3%), malignant neoplasm of bronchus and lung with 77 (1.9%), and motor or non-motor-vehicle accident type of vehicle unspecified with 76 (1.8%).

Data on death statistics were generated from copies of death certificates submitted monthly to PSA by 17 local civil registry offices in Aklan.
