‘Satellite markets’ help farmers sustain livelihood amid COVID-19

The local government unit of Miagao, Iloilo, through its Office of the Municipal Agriculturist, has established satellite markets in various areas in the municipality to help support farmers’ livelihood amid the public health threat of COVID-19.

Municipal Agricultural Technologist April Joy Depamaylo said 12 satellite markets have been opened and benefitted farmers since their products, including vegetables and fruits, are being brought in these sites.

“Residents from adjacent barangays could buy their basic needs for their household particularly wet and dry goods,” Depamaylo said.

She said these satellite markets helped decongest the number of people going to the main market in the town center.

The following barangays are the locations of the satellite markets: San Rafael, Potrido, Bacolod, Igbugo, Banbanan, La Consolacion, Dawog, Bliss, Kirayan Norte, San Jose, Igdalaquit, and Valencia.

Depamaylo said the associations of farmers or the officials in the barangay where the satellite markets are situated are taking charge of managing these sites.  (LTP/PIA-Iloilo)
