Three parish priests in city church contract Covid-19

Three parish priests in a church in Iloilo City tested positive for Covid-19, according to Mayor Jerry Treñas.

In a statement on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, Treñas confirmed that three priests contracted the virus including their cook and secretary. He did not identify the church.

“I was informed that three priests are COVID-19 positive at one church including their cook and secretary. Let us all please pray for them,” he said.

The religious sector, who are mostly composed of elderlies, have been susceptible to Covid-19 transmission.

Last July, the Carmelite Monastery and Convent in Barangay Lopez Jaena Norte, La Paz district was also placed on lockdown after several nuns and working staff were infected with Covid-19. The monastery also lost four nuns to Covid-19.

Amid the continuing rise of Covid-19 cases, the city government will conduct massive vaccination to reach out and protect more sectors.

The city targets to vaccinate seminaries, retirement houses of priests, orphanages, and nursing houses. Individuals who are not yet vaccinated in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies, national government agencies regional Offices, Department of Public Works and Highways Regional Office 6 (DPWH) and contractors, fiscals, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) porters, and Army personnel will also be included in the city’s Covid-19 vaccine roll-out.

Meanwhile, barangay and house-to-house vaccination will continue.

The city government also plans to conduct a store-to-store vaccination at the Calle Real in City Proper district starting next week.

On Monday, Sept. 6, a total of 5,237 received their Covid-19 jabs in the city’s mega vaccination sites and barangay-based roll-out. (ERS)
