UPV Initiative on Fisheries Resilience Presented at Workshop

Dr. Mary Grace C. Sedanza, a faculty member of the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), presented various initiatives of UP Visayas (UPV) on fisheries and coastal resilience during the workshop on the Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030 (FishSCORE2030) held in Seattle, Washington, USA on March 3, 2024.

Sedanza participated in the aforesaid workshop together with Ms. Anne Brigette B. Ledesma of the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies, CFOS.

The FishSCORE 2030 workshop was one of the eight workshops during the 9th World Fisheries Congress (WFC) held from March 3-7, 2024.

Sedanza was chosen among the participants to give a presentation on initiatives related to the topic of “Pathways to build climate resilience in fisheries.”

Sedanza presented three projects of UPV related to fisheries and coastal resilience. These were (1) The fishery, socio-economic aspect, and governance of Mytella strigata in the Philippine waters with Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro as project leader; (2) UPV Coastline Protection and Development for a Sustainable Future Program, led by Dr. Ramer Bautista; (3) Pilot Testing of the Green Mussel, Perna viridis Hatchery and Nursery Technology waters headed by Dr. Mary Jane Apines-Amar.

The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to learn about various programs and climate-resilient case studies as well as to actively participate in the effort to utilize climate-resilient vulnerability assessments and implement effective strategies in diverse fisheries.

Endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development as a decadal program, FishSCORE2030 will establish a global network of scientists, stakeholders, and practitioners to identify strategies for sustaining marine fisheries, protecting ocean ecosystem health, and ensuring equitable benefits from fisheries in a changing ocean.

Sedanza and Ledesma likewise participated in the 2024 WFC together with other participants from UPV-CFOS. (Ms. Lenilyn B. Gallos, CFOS, with sources from Asst. Prof. Mary Grace Sedanza)
