Visayas Container Terminal (VCT), a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), is making strides in transforming the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex (ICPC) into a competitive and efficient maritime trade gateway for Western Visayas.
Since starting commercial operations on April 1, VCT has steadily upgraded the terminal’s infrastructure and services, signaling a new era for regional maritime commerce.
Under the management of VCT, ICPC has serviced around 40 vessels, including container ships, Ro-Ro, and bulk carriers, significantly increasing the terminal’s efficiency.
“Our operations are off to a good start thanks to the great team that we have here at VCT. Everyone worked tirelessly to get everything up and running, including the renovation of the terminal’s facilities, and set up of the systems needed to run the terminal within our desired standards. Customers can expect more improvements as we continue to deploy more equipment and complete the rest of the terminal upgrades in less than two months,” VCT Executive Director Timothee Jeannin said.
Jeannin highlighted the extensive efforts in renovating the terminal’s facilities and implementing systems to meet ICTSI’s global standards.
The terminal is currently operational with five reach stackers, four trailers, and three prime movers. VCT is expecting the arrival of additional equipment in the coming weeks, which includes five empty container handlers, 12 prime movers, and 12 trailers. Two mobile harbor cranes are also set to be deployed in September to further enhance vessel operations.
VCT is also focusing on expanding its bulk operations through new investments in bagging machines, clamshells, and other mobile equipment. Furthermore, the construction of reefer stacks is underway, aiming to be completed by August with an initial capacity of 40 plugs to cater to refrigerated cargo, with potential expansion based on demand.
Apart from upgrading the terminal’s infrastructure, VCT is also actively negotiating to expand connections with both domestic and international shipping lines, enhancing ICPC’s competitiveness and ability to attract a broader range of shipping services and destinations.
VCT’s commitment extends beyond infrastructure development to fostering local economic growth and community development. The company emphasizes local hiring and engaging local contractors, leveraging regional talent and resources to bolster the local economy.
“We are proud to spearhead the transformation of the Iloilo Commercial Port Complex into a world-class maritime facility. At the same time, we are grateful for the opportunity to spur economic activity in the Visayas region and elevate the local communities that host our operations,” Jeannin said.
Earlier this year, ICTSI was granted a 25-year concession by the Philippine Ports Authority to operate and further develop ICPC. This partnership aims to modernize the port and establish it as a world-class trade gateway, enhancing connectivity and market access for Western Visayas’ key agriculture and fisheries sectors.
Visayas Container Terminal stands as ICTSI’s first operation in Central Philippines, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to regional development and sustainable growth through effective port management and operations.
