The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Guimaras is currently conducting the 2019 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) in 192 Enumerations Area (EAs) in Guimaras province.
The 192 EAs are in the barangays of San Isidro, Sto. Rosario, Getulio and San Pedro in the Municipality of Buenavista with 58 sample households; Lawi in Jordan (16 sample households); Lanipe, Oracon Sur and Concordia Sur in Nueva Valencia (52); Aguilar, Cabano EA 03002 and Cabano EA 02000 in San Lorenzo (56); and Alegria in Sibunag (10).
FLEMMS generally provides a quantitative framework that will serve as basis in the formulation of policies and programs for the improvement of literacy and education status of the population.
Moreover, FLEMMS is a nationwide household-based survey conducted by PSA every five years. The last round of the survey was conducted in 2013 and the next will be undertaken in November to December 2019.
The said survey has four specific objectives: to estimate the proportion of the population 10 years old and over who are basically literate; to estimate the proportion of the population 10 to 64 years old who are functionally literate and to determine their socio- economic characteristics; to determine the educational skill qualifications of the population in terms of formal schooling; and to determine the mass media exposure of the population.
“The survey here in Guimaras actually started last November 11, 2019 and expected to end on December 6 of this year” PSA-Guimaras Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
Losare also explained that the FLEMMS has rider questionnaires on the access to government information, Open Distance Learning and Filipino Culture and Values.
