BACOLOD CITY – The provincial government of Negros Occidental turned over PHP1.3 million in financial assistance to 44 former New People’s Army rebels on Friday.
1st Lt. Dan Carlo Samoza, civil military officer of the Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion, said each returnee received PHP30,000 in cash aid.
Of the total, 24 surrendered through the efforts of the 79th IB.
Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, assisted by Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, led the turnover ceremony at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol.
Lacson reiterated the provincial government’s commitment to peacebuilding and said development programs will continue supporting individuals and communities affected by conflict.
Dumosmog reaffirmed the Army’s support for peace and development, assuring the returnees of the military’s full backing as they reintegrate into civilian life.
“This is your second chance—make the most of it,” he said.
He also encouraged them to help persuade their former comrades to lay down their arms and choose peace.
Lt. Col. Arnel Calaoagan, 79th IB commander, said the milestone reflects the growing success of ongoing peace efforts.
He noted it should inspire others still involved in armed struggle to seize the opportunity for a better life.
During the ceremony, the rebel returnees expressed gratitude for the assistance and acknowledged the government’s commitment to helping them start anew.
Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment turned over PHP1.5 million in livelihood support for the Rice and Fertilizer Trading Project of the Campi Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association in Barangay Pilar, Hinigaran town.
The 303rd IBde said the initiative aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities in former conflict-affected communities.
It seeks to boost agricultural productivity and enhance economic stability in those areas.
The financial support underscores the government’s effort to uplift former conflict-affected organizations and strengthen local industries.
Dumosmog emphasized the importance of sustainable livelihood programs in addressing poverty and promoting inclusive growth.
He reaffirmed the brigade’s support for initiatives that encourage self-reliance and resilience among People’s Organizations.
