Hua Siong soars high in ILOPRISAA 2019

ILOILO City – Hua Siong College of Iloilo once again demonstrated itself as a force to be reckoned with in the recently concluded 2019 ILOPRISAA (Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association) Meet – raking in more than 50 medals.

For four consecutive years now, the HSCI Elementary Basketball Team has been hailed the champion in this division. Unbowed in defending its title, it is the team to beat in the annual ILOPRISAA, their performance looked forward to every year in several basketball leagues.

Impressive performances from Hua Siong’s Elementary and High School departments made possible the windfall of medal finishes. Among the most notable of the triumphs were the Red Phoenix’s stunning defense of their 2018 ILOPRISAA basketball crowns, as defending titleholders in both the secondary and elementary division. Hua Siong swept gold in the 2019 ILOPRISAA basketball arena with their stellar outings, going home back-to-back champions for both divisions.

The victory marks the fourth consecutive year the Hua Siong elementary basketball team has come up on top on the ILOPRISAA court, a spectacular and impressive feat in local sports. Meanwhile, the high school team faced off with powerhouse Sta. Clarita International School in the finals, Hua Siong emerging unbowed in the nail-biter finale. The school also bagged silver in 3×3 basketball.

Meanwhile, Hua Siong’s pride swimmer Kyla Soguilon notched gold medals in the 500-meter backstroke, 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter freestyle, and 50-meter butterfly events and silver in the 200-meter backstroke competition – for a total tally of 5 medals in the high school division this 2019 ILOPRISAA alone.

However, Soguilon wasn’t the lone standout star athlete: Theo Ange Salvador Ngu mined gold in athletics, emerging supreme first place in elementary 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdle, and the 200-meter dash.

In high school athletics, John Paul Solas and Eric William Sy pocketed one gold apiece in the triple jump and 200-meter walk events, respectively, as Emmanuel Mayuga managed to snag silver in the 800-meter run. Capping off Hua Siong’s athletics performance, Jasper Ian Alcantara grabbed bronze in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdle events, as well as joining Solas, Ronn Dinglasan, and Russel Thornton in the 4X100-meter relay and Solas, Thornton, and Patrick Barriga in the 4X400-meter relay for third place finishes.

In other high-stakes team events, Hua Siong emerged as the champions in the elementary – boys division of the volleyball competition, while the high school – boys division spikers seized silver. Meanwhile, the school’s lady booters clutched bronze in the high school – girls division of futsal.

Hua Siong also excelled in the taekwondo arena, gaining gold in elementary – kyorugi with a stunning performance from Jianne Irish Boniba, as Lyn Owem Santacera won silver in the same event and division. In the high school – poomsae competition, the trio of Dex Benedict Rico, Zachariah Audric Balsomo, and Josiah Shalom Ibe took home silver, as the bronze medal was won by Chloe Tanchanco, Kyan So, and Payap Peñaredondo in high school – kyorugi.

Meanwhile in table tennis, both the high school and elementary boys teams captured silver, as their girl counterparts netted bronze in both the secondary and elementary divisions. In the individual – single table tennis events, David Castronuevo clutched silver in the high school – boys division, as Jamie Belle Boniba (high school – girls division) and Kirk William Uy and Nico Gan (elementary – boys division) ended the contest with bronze medals. Stephanie Crisosto also swung her way to a silver finish in high school girls – lawn tennis.

Hua Siong, likewise, proved its dominant streak in chess, the duo of Iana Angela Sotaridana and J Irah Sargado both claiming gold to gain the elementary girls championship. Meanwhile, the elementary boys chess twosome of Jairo Sargado and Rhian Martin Guevara both notched silver to finish 1st runner-up in their team’s division.

Similarly, both the high school boys and high school girls chess teams capped the tournament with 1st runner-up finishes with their medal hauls. The high school girls team was composed of Hailey Chu (Gold), Angel Torda (Silver), Angel Grace Dapitan (Silver), Hannah Chu (Silver), and Lettice Chen (Bronze). Meanwhile the boys squad were Jerry Rodriguez (Silver), Adrian Tan (Silver), Teddy Rajeev, Joben Daclis, and Al Frank Young.
