Bulgarian tennis superstar Grigor Dimitrov, former world number three and the current 19th ATP ranked player, tested positive for COVID-19.
The tennis world is currently facing a tough situation after Dimitrov participated in the Adria Tour exhibition event organized by Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic’s event faced criticism after several people claimed that no social distancing was observed during the exhibition. To make matters worse, Dimtrov then announced on social media that he has contracted the virus.
Dimitrov first joined in the Serbia leg of the exhibition event, then swung to Croatia for the second leg of the exhibition series.
Right after Dimitrov’s public announcement, the main organizers of the exhibition event decided to cancel all ongoing legs.
“We are really sorry, we tried our best to respect all measures, and we did respect all measures imposed by the governments of Serbia and Croatia,” said event director Djordje Djokovic, Novak’s younger brother.
With one participant testing positive for the virus, Djordje and his team are looking to mass test all tennis players who participated in the two legs of the event.
“From our side, we did all we could but Grigor is unfortunately positive. At this moment we are organizing all medical services to check all people who have been in contact with Grigor, they will all be tested. I already contacted all players of the Adria Tour, and their families, all of the volunteers, all people involved in organization, absolutely none of them have any symptoms,” Djordje added.
