PSA-Guimaras joins nationwide virtual opening of 31st NSM

PSA-Guimaras staff participate in the virtual celebration of 31st NSM on October 1, 2020.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Guimaras Provincial Statistical Office joined in the nationwide virtual opening ceremony of the 31st National Statistics Month (NSM) hosted by the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) on Oct 1, 2020.

The nationwide virtual NSM opening celebration was successfully done online in adherence with health and safety measures.

“This year’s theme “Bridging Digital Gaps: Making Information Available to All” recognizes the importance of digitalization but emphasizes the need to address the social inequality in terms of access and use of ICT. It underscores that making quality information accessible and available to all enables leaders, policy-and decision-makers to formulate better plans to serve our country’s economic and social needs,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.

“We in the PSA-Guimaras strongly support the Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) in making possible ways to deliver relevant and reliable statistics produced by the PSC member agencies using digital/online platform in order to give a great interconnectivity and make all information available to all,” Losare added.

The Provincial Statistics Committee, the lead body of this month-long celebration in Guimaras, has lined up a series of activities for the 31st NSM: E-Poster Making Contest for Junior High School students, Infographics Contest for Senior High School students, Infomercial of DOT/PTO, Launching of the PSC Book, Capacity Development Virtual Training for PSC member agencies in partnership with the West Visayas State University, Kaathagan sa Estadistika, Provincial Data Expo, and the in-house statistical activities of DENR, DTI and other agencies/LGUs.

“The Kaathagan sa Estadistika, and Provincial Data Expo will be held during the World Statistics Day (WSD) Celebration on October 20, 2020 which carries the theme: Connecting the world with data we can trust,” Losare said.

The 3rd WSD is celebrated pursuant to PSA Board Resolution No. 07, series of 2020 which was approved on August 11 of the current year.

The activity will serve as an advocacy event to further support the work of statisticians across different settings, cultures, and domains as well as to promote public knowledge and accessibility to timely, reliable, and quality statistics for evidence-based and efficient decision-making.

The NSM is annually observed nationwide pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 647, series of 1990 “Declaring the month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month.” It aims to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of the society, and to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
