90 ‘died’ in Guimaras every month in 2020

Guimaras recorded an average of 90 deaths per month in 2020, 11 more than the 79 average registered deaths per month in 2019.

The number of deaths rose to 1,081 in 2020 from 951 in 2019, based on the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Guimaras.

More males died compared to females in 2020 with a large gender gap of 23.22 percent or a sex ratio of 160 male deaths to every 100 female deaths. This is higher than the 2019 gender gap of 14.83 percent or a sex ratio of 135 male deaths to every 100 female deaths.

On a monthly basis, December 2020 posted the highest number of deaths at 119, followed by October (102), September (100) and January (98).

The month of May saw the least number of deaths at 66.

In 2019, January recorded the highest number of deaths at 100, followed by the months of August (98) and July (94), while the month of September posted the least number of deaths with 56.

Jordan municipality accounted for the largest share at 37 percent of the provincial total in 2020 with 400 registered deaths. It is slightly higher by 0.76 percent compared to 2019, translating to an average of 33 registered deaths per month.

Following Jordan were the municipalities of Buenavista and Nueva Valencia with 251 and 233 registered deaths, respectively.

Sibunag and San Lorenzo registered the least number of deaths in 2020 with 90 and 107, respectively, contributing less than 10 percent to the provincial total.

“Death is registered by place of occurrence or where it took place, meaning not all deaths registered in the municipality are local residents,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.

In 2019, the bulk of registered deaths by place of occurrence were in Jordan municipality where the provincial hospital is lodged. It accounted for 41.75 percent, or 397 deaths, or an average of 79 deaths registered per month.

Buenavista had 221 deaths registered or 23.24 percent and Nueva Valencia with 162 registered deaths or 17.03 percent of the provincial total.

San Lorenzo and Sibunag contributed the least at 10.73 percent and 7.26 percent, respectively.
