BACOLOD City – The driver who was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a senior citizen at Barangay Alijis here over the weekend surrendered to the police two days later.
Police withheld the name of the 20-year-old driver of a silver gray Toyota Vios.
Police Captain Elmer Bonilla, head of Police Station 7, said the driver, along with his mother and legal counsel, went to the police station past 3 p.m. Monday.
Bonilla said the driver told the police that he is willing to face the responsibility for the accident that claimed the life of 69-year-old Oliva Porceso.
Porceso was about to ride a passenger jeepney on her way to the market when she was sideswiped by the said vehicle on June 12.
Bonilla said that it took two days for the driver to surface as he was probably assessing the situation.
Bonilla said the driver was on his way home from an online gaming with a friend when the accident happened.
“Nag deretso lang daw siya kay abi niya wala niya ma igo,” the station commander added.
Bonilla said the driver and the victim’s family have yet to meet.
The car is now under police custody, but the driver was not detained because the 18-hour reglementary detention period already lapsed, Bonilla said.
