The Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards ended its dominant run with a championship title after blasting the Zamboanga Family’s Brand Sardines, 69-56, during Game 4 of the OKbet-Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) 4th season grand finals last December 12, 2022.
After letting Game 3 slip away with a 65-75 loss, the Rice Vanguards immediately turned on the jets from the get-go and were eager to end the championship series against Zamboanga in just four games.
Byron Villarias once again turned berserk mode and spearheaded Nueva Ecija’s insane 24-4 scoring run in the second quarter.
What was once a 15-all deadlock game after the first 10 minutes suddenly became 39-19 in favor of the Rice Vanguards. Villarias led the onslaught after scoring eight-straight points and never looked back after their offensive clinic.
Villarias’ stellar performance of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals helped him win the Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Also stepping up for Nueva Ecija is main gunner and veteran swingman Michael Juico who continued his consistent and steady play while chipping in 11 points and four boards.
Former PBA players Michael Mabulac and Jonathan Uyloan also rose to the occasion and used their experience in the huge win.
The dynamic duo put up an efficient offensive display and combined for 19 points, eight rebounds, four dimes, and two steals.
On the other hand, Zamboanga’s superstar and season MVP Jayvee Marcelino tried to keep his team within striking distance after coming alive in the third quarter.
However, the Rice Vanguards’ firepower kept their lead within double digits and always had answers for Marcelino’s personal scoring run.
With the win, Nueva Ecija was awarded the championship trophy and the 14-million pesos cash prize by MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes during the awarding ceremony.
