
Death cases in Guimaras increased minimally by 0.70 percent during the first quarter (Q1) of 2023 with 289 cases compared to 287 in the same quarter of 2022.
Acute Cardiac Arrest was the leading cause of death, claiming the lives of 54 individuals in the first quarter of the current year, based on the data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
In addition to Acute Cardiac Arrest, the recorded cases of Community Acquired Pneumonia, Hypoxic Encephalopathy, Acute Myocardial Infarction, and Cerebrovascular Disease were the top 5 primary causes of death, showing that the mortality rate for these conditions is equal for both males and females, with a total of 77 cases for each gender.
Out of the five municipalities, San Lorenzo showed the most significant slump in the number of deaths, after decreasing by 45.71 percent from 35 fatalities in Q1 of 2022 to only 19 in Q1 of 2023.

“This was followed by Buenavista and Nueva Valencia, which both posyted reductions in deaths by 10.13 percent and 2.13 percent, respectively,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
“However, there was an escalation in fatalities in Jordan and Sibunag, with a rise of 25 percent and 4.55 percent, respectively,” Losare added.
Meanwhile, it was observed that males had a higher mortality rate compared to females in both quarters.
“Despite a decrease in fatalities for males from 165 in Q1 of 2022 to only 162 in Q1 of 2023, there was an increase in fatalities for females from 122 in Q1 of 2022 to 127 in Q1 of 2023, the average gender gap for both quarters were still about 13.55 percent,” Losare said.
