The UP Visayas Office of Continuing Education and Pahinungod (OCEP) and the Division of Humanities, CAS conducted a Seminar Workshop on Public Speaking and Effective Presentations on June 24, 2023 at Smallville 21 Hotel.
The seminar-workshop called “APPRECIATE: 4-part Seminar Workshop on Building a CPA’s Value through Public Speaking and Effective Presentations,” aims to develop effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) and develop engaging content. It is approved by the Professional Regulation Commission and CPA attendees may earn 7 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) units.
Faculty members from the Division of Humanities served as speakers and facilitators. Prof. Julie E. Prescott gave a talk on public speaking with topics on managing public speaking anxiety and verbal and nonverbal communication techniques. Prof. Robert L. Rodriguez talked about effective presentation with topics on preparing engaging content and effective use of audio-visual and technological aides.
Chancellor Clement C. Camposano, in his welcome message, stressed the practical value of public speaking and presentation among CPAs especially in today’s challenging technology climate.
A total of thirty-six (36) attendees took part in the seminar-workshop. One of the candidates mentioned that the seminar-workshop is helpful and useful in their profession as accountants. For some accountants, public speaking or preparation of presentations are not really their “cup of tea.”
Prof. Maria Theresa C. Albaña, Director of OCEP, stated that the 7-point CPD activity was conducted in response to a pressing need for a workshop that addresses the pressures faced by accountants in their professional practice, wherein effective communication with staff, supervisors, clients, colleagues, students, other stakeholders, and the general public is vital. Certified Public Accountants and other licensed professionals can expect another OCEP-organized CPD accredited face-to-face workshop in the 2nd half of the year.
Further, Prof. Albaña mentioned that as part of fulfilling OCEP’s mandate of developing and delivering relevant and excellent continuing education programs and providing learning opportunities to the industry and the community, the office will also be rolling out a series of capacity building trainings for MSMEs and cottage industry players across Western Visayas, starting with the Province of Guimaras this July.
The University of the Philippines Visayas, through the Office of Continuing Education and Pahinungod, is an Accredited CPD Provider by the Professional Regulation Commission. (Prof. Jude Vincent E. Parcon and Prof. Katherine T. Valencia, HumDiv-CAS)
