Army’s 3ID adopts proactive stance following Marawi bombing

Let no similar incident akin to what happened in Marawi City occur in the Visayas.

The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division stressed this message as it told its units to preempt any terror attacks in Central and Western Visayas.

Major General Marion Sison, 3ID commander, has also immediately directed all units to implement proactive security and target hardening measures.

Along with this, he ordered them to intensify intelligence gathering and monitoring of the existence of extremists and other lawless terrorist groups.

Sison also advocated for close coordination with all stakeholders and partner agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), to strengthen counter-terrorism operations to address potential threats.

He also reminded the troops to give preferential attention to places of convergence and conveyances particularly tourist spots, malls, places of worship, airport and seaports, transport terminals, public markets and school premises, among others, as these are likely targets due to heavy foot traffic.

But as authorities do their work, the public should also do their share, he added.

Sison called on the people of Western and Central Visayas to remain vigilant.

He enjoined them to report to authorities suspicious individuals and activities and to actively participate in the collective effort to keep and safeguard local communities.

“In doing so, we can effectively thwart potential acts of terror and prevail over those who seek to destroy our peace,” he said.

Amidst the tragic incident, Sison said not to let fear grip and hinder one’s daily activities.

“We should continue to live on. Yet, we must emerge stronger, more resilient, and devoted to preserving and keeping our communities safe and our people protected from any terror attack,” Sison said.

An explosion rocked the Mindanao State University (MSU)’s Dimaporo Gymnasium around 7:14 a.m. during the first Sunday of Advent Mass attended by students and teachers.

Four persons were killed and some 50 others were injured.

In a statement, the 3rd ID has strongly condemned “the barbaric act of terror.”

“In the wake of this devastating bombing at MSU, it is with profound sorrow that we extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the families of the victims and the students and faculty of MSU,” it said.

The statement added, “May they find the strength and courage to cope with the painful loss of their loved ones and carry on in the face of this immense tragedy.”
