Concrete road in central Iloilo town provides convenient access from farms to market

Farm-to-market road is a vital infrastructure that connects rural farmers with markets and centers of commercial development in an area. This road is essential, providing farmers access to the resources necessary for them to produce and distribute their goods. Without this road, farmers would not be able to make a living, and the nation’s food production would suffer.

Thus, as its humble contribution towards agricultural sustainability and economic stability of the people in far-flung communities in Leganes, Iloilo, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office constructed a concrete farm-to-market road, specifically in Sitio Moda in Barangay Lapayon.

The Php 11.820-million project involves the construction of a 775-meter, 2-lane Portland Concrete Cement Pavement (PCCP) road, providing access to rice and other agricultural-producing farms in the area.

Based on the report of District Engineer Mario G. Soriano, OIC-Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said this 2-lane road will facilitate faster movement of goods from farms to the town proper, as well as to the neighboring city of Iloilo.

This also supports the nation’s food production, provides access to services, and helps to create jobs in the transportation sector.

“This paved road offers a vital contribution to economic development and growth in the locality and provides easy access to basic services and economic opportunities for an improved quality of life,” OIC-RD Sanny Boy O. Oropel said

“This will provide better road network for better mobility of the people and easier access for transport of products from farms to the market,” Oropel added.

In addition, District Engineer Mario G. Soriano stressed that the construction of this concrete farm-to-market road is necessary to provide access to education, healthcare, and other services.

“Farmers in rural and far-flung areas often face challenges in accessing basic government services, thus, this farm-to-market road can help bridge the gap between the government and people in local communities,” DE Mario G. Soriano said.

“This paved road traverses along vast agricultural lands, hence, its improvement will greatly benefit the people, especially producers of crops and other agricultural products, and animal raisers,” Soriano added.

DPWH will continue to implement significant road projects that will connect rural communities to main thoroughfares for faster transportation and easy access to basic government services. (DPWH-6)
