Senator Grace Poe, Chairperson of the Committee on Public Services, emphasized that the employment of Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco) staff by the Negros Electric and Power Corporation (Negros Power) will not be automatic.
Poe made the statement during the committee’s deliberation on Negros Power’s franchise bill on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
The senator acknowledged the presence of hardworking Ceneco employees who merit absorption into the new company but also pointed out that not all are suitable.
“There are members among you who are excellent, diligent, they deserve to be absorbed, they deserve to be employed. However, I’m sure that even you can identify employees who are lazy, who do nothing. That’s not fair, right,” Poe addressed the union.
“It’s not automatic that just because you’re an employee, you have a job forever. It doesn’t work like that,” she added.
Senator Poe also insisted on the importance of performance-based hiring, irrespective of age, gender, or appearance.
“So when it’s said that all will be taken, it means all who are qualified should be considered. It’s not about age, gender, or appearance, but performance.”
She expressed her belief that a joint venture company’s success hinges on having a workforce that is active and committed to their roles.
“Employment is not a right; it comes with the responsibility to fulfill your duties.”
The Senator assured the employees that the franchise’s approval would be beneficial to all.
“We all stand to gain benefits if the service in your area improves. Don’t be afraid of being left out. You should be part of the growth,” Poe said
Under the Joint Venture Agreement between Ceneco and Primelectric/Negros Power, and the proposed franchise, preference in hiring will be given to current Ceneco employees for the new utility serving Central Negros.
Roel Castro, president of Negros Power, informed Senator Poe that over 250 Ceneco employees had already applied, and are presently in the recruitment phase.
