In a bold move amid ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, Representative Joel R. Chua of Manila’s Third District has called for the expulsion of Chinese diplomats from the Philippines, describing it as a “proportionate response” to recent aggressive actions by China.

Rep. Chua, a noted advocate for urban poor and sports, also urged the filing of environmental and maritime legal actions against China. He pointed to the “disrespect, dishonesty, and disinformation” spread by the Embassy of China as justifications for these drastic measures.

“Expulsion in this situation is not escalation but a proportionate response,” Chua stated, emphasizing that the actions of the Chinese embassy have significantly undermined diplomatic relations.

Furthermore, the congressman highlighted the environmental destruction caused by China in various parts of the disputed waters, including Panganiban Reef (Mischief Reef), Ayungin Shoal, and Bajo de Masinloc.

He called for the filing of a Writ of Kalikasan, a legal remedy aimed at protecting the environment in the Philippines, to address the ecological damage inflicted by Chinese activities.

Chua also suggested bringing cases related to maritime law enforcement and the disruption of freedom of navigation before the admiralty courts in Subic and Palawan, underscoring the wealth of evidence supporting such legal challenges.

“It is time to assert our sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea through the legal and diplomatic means available,” Chua concluded, signaling a possible new phase in the Philippines’ strategy to confront China’s maritime assertiveness.
