With the one-month gun ban ending today, the Guimaras Police Provincial Office (GPPO) has not recorded any arrests for violations.
“And we don’t expect any arrests until this is over,” said Colonel Rhea Santos, Guimaras police chief.
Santos attributed the success to extensive information dissemination through online platforms and frequent reminders.
The one-month gun ban was enforced across Guimaras province in conjunction with the Manggahan Festival 2024 and the Guimaras 32nd Provincehood Anniversary.
The suspension of all permits to transport and carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR) in Guimaras ran from 12:01 a.m. on May 1 until 11:59 p.m. on May 31, 2024.
The order was detailed in a memorandum issued by PNP Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil dated April 30, 2024.
Brigadier General Jack Wanky, Western Visayas police chief, requested the gun ban following a letter from Governor JC Rahman A. Nava.
Initially, the local government and the Guimaras Police Provincial Office requested the PTCFOR suspension from May 3 to 22, 2024, covering the celebration activities. However, the PNP higher headquarters approved a month-long firearms ban.
During the period, only members of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other law enforcement agencies performing official duties in agency-prescribed uniforms were allowed to carry firearms, ensuring a firearm-free event for public safety.
