BACOLOD CITY – Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez urged Bacolodnons to exercise caution amid the emergence of a new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) variant called “FLiRT.”
This comes after a recent increase in Covid-19 cases due to the new variant was noted in some countries.
Based on data from the City Health Office (CHO), five new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Bacolod as of May 30.
In a statement through Benitez’s spokesperson, Atty. Caesar Distrito, he emphasized that Covid-19 remains a threat.
“As this is still a variant of monitoring, close surveillance is being conducted in Bacolod and throughout the country,” he said.
Benitez directed the CHO to monitor the situation and prepare the necessary health response plan.
The CHO encouraged everyone to wear masks in enclosed settings, especially if they have flu or any respiratory tract infection, are immunocompromised, senior citizens, young children, or are in medical facilities (clinics, hospitals, birthing homes, laboratories). They also urged those who are sick to stay at home.
Practicing good hygiene by covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, washing or sanitizing hands frequently, and disinfecting touched surfaces are also highly recommended.
The CHO also encouraged outdoor gatherings, purification of indoor air, and getting vaccinated against flu, pneumonia, and Covid-19 whenever possible.
