The Los Angeles Lakers officially considered JJ Redick to become their next head coach after ESPN veteran NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed the update on June 13, 2024.
This comes after Dan Hurley, the current chief tactician of the UConn Huskies playing in the NCAA Division I, turned down the Lakers’ $70-million coaching job offer.
According to Wojnarowski, the 15-year NBA veteran will be meeting with the Lakers’ front office this weekend for the coaching interview.
Talks of Redick becoming the next head coach of the Lakers quickly went viral on social media after he collaborated with LeBron James in a basketball podcast named “Mind the Game Pod”.
Before the duo worked together, Wojnarowski said that Redick and Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka already met during the NBA Draft Combine last month.
Despite not having any strong coaching background, Redick’s knowledge and grasp of the game helped him build his reputation as one of the most reliable and most-sought basketball analysts in the world.
He took social media and YouTube by storm when he started his own podcast, The Old Man & the Three, and has now amassed a total of 1.1 million subscribers.
Last offseason, Redick tried to enter his first NBA coaching stint when he was interviewed by the Toronto Raptors.
Aside from Toronto, the Charlotte Hornets also called Redick and arranged a coaching interview with him.
Redick is currently a part of the official NBA Finals media crew and is the ESPN broadcaster alongside Doris Burke, one of the most respected sports broadcasters in the world.
