Gabi eyes redemption in JPGT Finals chase

Alexie Gabi, who narrowly missed out on a national finals spot in the Visayas series, is set to make a determined bid for redemption as the ICTSI Junior PGT resumes on Tuesday at the Riviera Golf and Country Club.

Gabi, a standout in the girls’ 13-15 category, secured third place in previous tournaments in Murcia, Binitin, and Bacolod.

Her strong performances in the Visayas series have kept her in contention, though she was edged out of a national finals berth by Rane Chiu’s playoff victory over Tiffany Bernardino in Negros.

Gabi’s next challenge will be in the Luzon Series 4, part of the ongoing circuit sponsored by ICTSI and organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.

The top 72 players from the series will advance to the national finals, with four spots from each category in the seven-leg Luzon series and two berths from the Mindanao series.

“I just told myself to focus on my game instead of getting annoyed and distracted,” Gabi said, reflecting on her resilience in past competitions . She will face tough competition from other contenders like Levonne Talion, Maria Monserrat Lapuz, and Kendra Garingalao in the girls’ 13-15 category.

The boys’ 13-15 category will see Ramon Fabie and Santi Asuncion among the frontrunners.

In the premier 16-18 class, Rafa Anciano, who recently won a sudden death victory over Chloe Rada at Pinewoods, is expected to be a strong contender alongside Casey Frankum, Gabriela Sison, and Necky Tortosa from Iloilo.

Following the Riviera tournament, the Mindanao swing will commence on July 23 at Apo Golf and Country Club in Davao, continuing at various clubs until mid-August.

The entire series aims to provide young golfers a platform to showcase their skills and vie for a coveted spot in the national finals set for October at The Country Club in Laguna .
