A two-day training titled “Training on Tabagak/Tamban Product Using Innovative Fish Processing Technologies” was conducted at the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CFAS) Fish Processing Technologies, Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) at the Main Campus-Tiwi Site, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, on June 28-29, 2024.
The event, attended by 30 participants, was facilitated by ISUFST with Prof. Cjay B. Soliven serving as the Resource Speaker and Trainer, alongside facilitators Mr. Greco C. Gutierrez and Ms. Vanica P. Baglosa.
This training is part of ISUFST’s commitment to the Tambon 2.0 Project of the PInnovation Academy, the event initiator, and the Asosasyon sang mga Magagmay nga Mangingisda san Santiago (AMMS), the beneficiaries.
The project aims to assist local fisherfolk in Santiago, Barotac Viejo, by providing them with advanced fish processing technologies to enhance their product development capabilities.
Prof. Cjay B. Soliven expressed gratitude for the collaboration.
“We are thankful to PInnovation for choosing ISUFST as their partner in assisting the AMMS. I believe this training will greatly help the association strengthen its capability to develop products from tamban using innovative processing technologies. As a university that provides community services, we are willing to share our technologies to improve your association, promote the sustainable use of resources, especially tamban, which is abundant in Santiago, Barotac Viejo, and improve the economic status of each member.”
He added, “However, the challenge lies in ensuring that all members of the association are committed to the goal and dedicated to protecting the association. As we progress, we look forward to the association establishing its product line, and ISUFST will assist in market discovery and the success of the product once all learnings from this training are applied.”
The PInnovation Academy, initiated by the Center for Disaster Preparedness (CDP) in 2021, supports community-led innovations in Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (CCAM).
It collaborates with various community innovators across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, including AMMS, which has developed the “Tambon 2.0 Project: Merging of Two Fishing Gears into One,” showcasing cost-efficient and disaster-resilient fishing methods.
This collaboration between ISUFST, PInnovation Academy, and AMMS—facilitated by PInnovation and ISUFST’s Research and Development and the International Affairs and Linkages office—underscores the importance of integrating modern technologies and innovative practices to foster sustainable development and economic growth within local communities.
