One of the biggest boxing bouts of the year might be put on hold after Vasiliy Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas, announced that his client isn’t motivated to fight Gervonta Davis this 2024.
According to multiple reports, Klimas announced that Lomachenko couldn’t prepare and enter training camp if he wasn’t motivated to fight Davis.
Klimas added that Lomachenko is looking to spend the rest of the year with his family following a hectic schedule in the first seven months of 2024.
As per ESPN sources, ongoing negotiations between the Lomachenko and Davis camps have officially broken off, putting the targeted fight on hold until talks resume again.
“With Loma, just money is not what motivates him. He doesn’t take anything just because of money. You can offer him millions, tens of millions of dollars. If he doesn’t have the motivation, he’s not ready to prepare for the fight,” said Klimas.
On July 11, 2024, Founder and CEO of Top Rank Promotions Bob Arum already bared that the fight would take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand or T-Mobile Arena.
The expected fight date will be November 2024, with Top Rank Promotions also giving out contract clauses to both fighters.
Although an update on both camps really met and sat down for a talk wasn’t confirmed, Arum revealed that a series of ongoing negotiations helped materialize their expected accomplishment reports.
During the last six years, Lomachenko was always hunting for Davis, but the latter took a different route and fought the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, Isaac Cruz, and Ryan Garcia.
It was just after his fight with Frank Martin that Davis publicly aired his desire to square off with Lomachenko to unify the lightweight division.
Davis is coming off another knockout win last June 16, 2024, after taking down the resilient Martin in eight rounds.
Meanwhile, Lomachenko is also fresh from a convincing win last May after stopping George Kambosos Jr. in the 11th round of their IBF title clash.
