Over 130 faculty and staff members at West Visayas State University – Janiuay Campus (WVSU-JC) were urged to transcend gender binaries and foster inclusivity during the 11th Faculty and Staff Institute on July 31, 2024.
Assistant Professor Early Sol A. Gadong of UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) led the charge, delivering a compelling talk on “Transcending Gender Binary in the Workplace.”
The event, themed “Faculty and Staff: Weaving Tomorrow’s Tapestry-Enriching Theory, Pedagogy, and Practices,” emphasized the significance of inclusivity and respect in both educational and professional environments.
Gadong’s presentation focused on the importance of understanding Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIE-SC) to create a supportive and accepting workplace.
“When we are required to conform strictly to the characteristics associated with our assumed gender, we lose access to a significant part of our human experience. This restriction not only limits our own behavior and potential but also hinders the growth, authenticity, and potential of others,” Gadong said.
Highlighting the essential role of recognizing diverse identities, Gadong stressed, “Understanding SOGIE-SC is crucial for fostering inclusivity and respect. It helps us recognize and affirm the diverse identities and experiences of individuals. By acknowledging this diversity, we can create more supportive and accepting environments in our workplaces, schools, and communities.”
In addition to advocating for broader gender inclusivity, Gadong underscored the benefits of gender equality for men, particularly through Paternity Leave policies.
“Gender equality also benefits men as it gave rise to Paternity Leave policies. This leave allows fathers to spend more time with their newborn babies, fostering stronger family bonds and sharing the responsibilities of childcare,” she noted.
Gadong proposed several approaches to support gender inclusivity in the workplace, including education, advocacy, allyship, and action.
By educating the workforce about SOGIE-SC, organizations can challenge stereotypes, promote empathy, and cultivate a more respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
The session on transcending gender binaries at WVSU-JC sparked a meaningful discussion about inclusivity, urging the academic community to continue prioritizing gender equality and diversity.
As the university progresses, maintaining a focus on these areas will be vital for creating an equitable and thriving learning environment for all.
The 11th Faculty and Staff Institute also addressed other significant topics such as Authentic Assessment, Online Etiquette, and Positive Workplace and Healthy Culture, providing a platform for comprehensive discussions on critical issues in education.
