Iloilo could soon play a central role in international football as the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) considers the province to host group stage matches for the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup in November 2025.

The possibility was discussed during a courtesy call to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., led by PFF President John Gutierrez.

Gutierrez emphasized Iloilo’s significance as the cradle of football in the Philippines, making it a fitting venue for the prestigious event. He expressed confidence that the province has what it takes to meet the stringent requirements set by FIFA for hosting the competition.

The tournament will feature 16 teams, including four from Europe (UEFA), three from Asia (AFC), two from Africa (CAF), three from South America (CONMEBOL), two from North/Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF), and one from Oceania (OCF). The Philippines will complete the roster as the host nation.

Governor Defensor assured full support from the provincial government, offering assistance to ensure Iloilo meets all necessary requirements. “This is a great opportunity to showcase Iloilo’s love for football and our capability to host world-class events,” Defensor said.

A FIFA technical team is expected to visit Iloilo next week to inspect the proposed venues and assess their readiness. Their recommendations will be crucial in determining if the province can secure its spot as a host.

Iloilo Provincial Administrator Dr. Raul Banias, who facilitated the courtesy call, also voiced his support, emphasizing the province’s commitment to the event. Gutierrez was joined by key football figures, including FIFA Council Member Mariano Araneta, Jr., former PFF General Secretary Pablito Araneta, former PFF Treasurer and Grassroots Development Head Bonnie Ladrido, and PFF Futsal Head Kevin Goco, all of whom are optimistic about Iloilo’s potential to host the event.

The decision on whether Iloilo will be a host city is eagerly awaited, as it would mark a significant milestone for the province in the realm of international sports.
