The collaboration will increase the number of Globe facilities powered by renewable energy, significantly contributing to the company’s sustainability efforts.
The partnership, which began in 2020, will help Globe grow its renewable energy-powered sites from 29 to nearly 70 within two years. This will be facilitated through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) and the Green Energy Option Program (GEOP).
First Gen, a leading clean energy provider, will remain a key partner in this expansion.
Carlos Lorenzo Vega, First Gen’s Vice President for Power Marketing, Economics, and Trading, emphasized the alignment of both companies’ visions.
“Globe and First Gen share the same vision of a decarbonized and regenerative future where sustainability is ingrained into the organization and operations. We are pleased to continue our partnership and are committed to supporting Globe as it journeys towards greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact,” he said.
Raymond Martin Aguilar, Globe’s Vice President for Risk and Property Management, echoed the importance of sustainability in business strategy.
“At Globe, sustainability and risk management are core strategies for building business resilience. This partnership with First Gen is a testament to our dedication to these principles,” Aguilar stated.
To commemorate the renewed partnership, a ceremonial signing took place involving Globe, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) Philippines, and First Gen. The collaboration extends beyond Globe’s network facilities to include STT GDC’s data centers in Cavite.
The telecom industry, a significant energy consumer, is responsible for considerable greenhouse gas emissions.
Globe has been proactive in transitioning its facilities to renewable energy, beginning in 2019. As of the end of 2023, 18% of its energy consumption comes from renewable sources, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 77,000 tons.
Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer, highlighted the company’s leadership in sustainability.
“As the first publicly-listed company in the Philippines to have approved science-based emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), this partnership fuels us in our pursuit of net-zero ambitions by greening the network and partnering with sustainability-driven companies,” Crisanto said.
