BACOLOD CITY – The Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) reported a 46.6% increase in traffic-related incidents from January 1 to September 9 this year.
BCPO data showed 280 traffic incidents recorded so far in 2024, an increase of 89 from the 191 incidents during the same period in 2023.
Reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property accounted for the highest number of incidents, with 185 cases this year compared to 104 last year—an increase of 81, or 77.14%.
This was followed by reckless imprudence resulting in physical injury, which saw 79 incidents this year, up from 68 in 2023, an increase of 10, or 14.49%.
However, reckless imprudence resulting in homicide decreased by three cases, or 15.79%, with 16 incidents recorded this year compared to 19 last year.
The vehicles involved in these accidents included 95 motorcycles, 89 cars, 31 trucks, 27 jeepneys, 19 public utility jeepneys (PUJs), 10 tricycles, four e-bikes, and one bicycle.
The BCPO emphasized that the significant number of physical injuries and fatalities underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures and heightened public awareness.
Residents and drivers were urged to take proactive steps to prevent becoming victims of traffic incidents.
The city police reminded the public to follow traffic regulations, practice defensive driving, maintain their vehicles regularly, and avoid distracted driving.
Public cooperation, they stressed, is key to creating a safer driving environment for all.
The BCPO also assured the public that it remains committed to improving road safety through increased patrols and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.
