The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is on track to add approximately 83 megawatts (MW) of clean and renewable energy to its portfolio by the end of the year, aligning with its parent company’s ambitious push towards net-zero carbon emissions.
Frances Ariola, head of EDC’s corporate communications, emphasized that this initiative supports First Philippine Holdings’ (FPH) broader mission to help the country transition to cleaner energy sources.
“The Lopez Group’s strategy is focused on clean and renewable energy, which is key to reducing our carbon footprint,” Ariola said.
Among the renewable energy projects set for completion in 2024 are several geothermal power plants.
These include the 29-MW Palayan Bayan binary power plant in Bicol, the 5.6-MW geothermal facility in Bago City, Negros Occidental, the 20-MW Tanawon plant in Bicol, and the 28-MW Mahanagdong binary power plant in Leyte.
Additionally, EDC is eyeing the integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to bolster the performance of its geothermal plants.
Upcoming projects include a 20-megawatt-hour (MWh) storage system at BacMan in Bicol, a 10-MWh system in Tongonan, Leyte, and another 10-MWh unit in Negros.
EDC, the largest producer of geothermal energy in the Philippines, already operates around 1,500 MW of renewable energy capacity, spanning geothermal, wind, solar, and hydropower sources.
The ongoing projects are expected to further solidify the company’s leading role in renewable energy production.
Looking ahead, EDC is exploring new opportunities to expand in Mindanao and Luzon, and internationally. One of the projects under consideration is a concession area in Indonesia, where EDC could potentially develop renewable energy projects.
