UPV economics students shine at National Economic Summit

A team of University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) economics students won 1st runner-up in the National Economic Summit 2024 Case Competition, held at the Institute of Biology Auditorium, UP Diliman, on Sept. 14, 2024.

BS Economics students Jons Stephen Hije, Georgia Sophia Alexia Cuajotor, Trisha Jean Lozano, and Gwyneth Hilary Dequiña earned praise for their insightful paper. In addition to the group award, Hije was named Best Presenter among the top groups.

Their team, UPV Oecon, presented a paper titled “‘Di Lang Dagat, Lahat Dapat: A Trans-sectoral Approach to Economic Security Amid Maritime Concerns.” It highlighted the critical role of the Philippines’ marine resources in promoting sustainable economic growth.

The paper outlined strategies across various sectors—fisheries, energy, agriculture, and coastal infrastructure—that aim to protect marine ecosystems while addressing challenges in the West Philippine Sea.

Their approach resonated with the summit’s theme, “The Green Leap: Pioneering Sustainable Economic Development to Achieve Global Goals.”

The team was mentored by Professor Dr. Rodelio F. Subade. (Ms. Trisha Jean Lozano with sources the UPV OEcon Team)
