Baguio, Dipolog, Makati, and Tagum have joined the global We Love Cities (WLC) campaign organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The campaign aims to raise awareness and inspire citizens to support their cities’ sustainable urban development efforts.
Following the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) 2023-2024, Baguio, Makati, and Tagum were named national finalists, allowing them to participate in the WLC campaign.
Dipolog, the OPCC 2021-2022 national winner, rejoined the campaign as an “All-Star” city.
“Filipinos across the country are eager to support sustainability initiatives, and these four cities are role models for other local governments,” said Imee Bellen, project manager of the OPCC.
The WLC campaign will run throughout October 2024, encouraging citizens to post on social media about their city’s sustainable initiatives.
Baguio City is focusing on reducing emissions by implementing vehicle-free Sundays on Session Road, promoting a cleaner environment.
Dipolog City is part of the Cities Race to Resilience initiative, driving climate adaptation actions globally.
Makati City declared a climate emergency in 2022 and has committed to the 1.5°C target for 2030 and 2050.
Tagum City promotes sustainability through community forums on climate change.
“Cities are on the frontlines of climate mitigation with innovative solutions and public engagement. The WLC campaign recognizes their efforts and provides citizens with a platform to contribute,” Bellen added.
The city with the most website votes, social media posts, and suggestions by October 31, 2024, will be declared the We Love Cities global winner.
