Teacher-researchers from the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) presented groundbreaking studies at the 11th International Conference on Teacher Education (ICTED), held Nov. 13-15, 2024, at the Iloilo Convention Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
With the theme “Preparing Teachers for Education 5.0 Toward Sustainable Futures: Thrusts, Challenges, and Praxis,” the conference focused on leveraging technology to create sustainable and inclusive learning environments.
ISUFST researchers highlighted innovative educational practices through their studies.
Dr. Ronilo Aponte, along with advisees Hannah Marie Failanza and Camila de los Reyes, presented “Four Games, One exCELLent Goal: Investigating the Effectiveness of Game-Based Learning on Learners’ Understanding and Experiences in Mitosis.”
The study demonstrated the potential of game-based learning to improve students’ comprehension of mitosis and enhance their learning experiences.
Dr. Shiela May Labajo’s study, “Family Reading Practices and Parents’ Involvement on Learners’ Reading Performance in English,” highlighted the critical role of family reading habits and parental engagement in boosting students’ literacy skills.
Michle Celeste introduced photovoice as a reflective tool through her study, “Lens on the Classroom: Photovoice as a Reflective Tool for Pre-Service Teachers’ Narrative Writing.”
Her research demonstrated the effectiveness of photovoice in helping pre-service teachers document and reflect on their classroom experiences.
Adding to ISUFST’s contributions, faculty member John Mark P. Burila of the Main Tiwi Site and a PhD Education student at UP Diliman, served as a facilitator on the Program Committee.
Burila collaborated with local organizers from UP Visayas and emphasized the importance of integrating technology with equity, purpose, and sustainability to ensure meaningful learning in an ever-evolving educational landscape.
ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason Jr. commended the researchers for their significant contributions to the conference.
Dr. Siason reaffirmed the university’s commitment to fostering a research-driven academic culture aligned with its vision to become “a leading and empowering research university in fisheries, agriculture, education, and technology in Southeast Asia by 2030.”
He noted that participation in international platforms like ICTED underscores ISUFST’s dedication to innovative and inclusive education.
Organized by the University of the Philippines College of Education, the ICTED conference brought together educators, policymakers, and researchers to address themes such as Artificial Intelligence, STEM, inclusive education, and teacher development.
The event provided actionable insights into preparing educators for Education 5.0 while addressing socio-economic challenges and cultural diversity in education.
ISUFST’s participation in ICTED 2024 reflects its commitment to advancing educational research and innovation while promoting its principles of Integrity, Social Justice, Discipline, and Academic Excellence.
The conference also reaffirmed the shared responsibility of educators to foster sustainable futures through inclusive and meaningful education practices.
