BACOLOD CITY — Barangay Magsaysay in Cadiz City has been named the champion in child protection across Negros Occidental, emerging as the grand winner among 11 finalists from various municipalities and cities in the province.

The competition, led by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, included finalists from Bago City, Don Salvador Benedicto, Hinobaan, Isabela, Kabankalan City, Silay City, San Carlos City, and Victorias City.

The awarding ceremony is scheduled to take place at the provincial capitol’s social hall on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Barangay Magsaysay earned the recognition for its innovative child protection initiatives, including the establishment of a 24/7 child helpline, educational campaigns on anti-bullying and child abuse prevention, and partnerships with schools to promote child welfare.

Barangay Captain Heide Zaldivia said the award reflects the community’s dedication to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children.

“This award demonstrates our community’s commitment to ensuring that every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment,” Zaldivia said.

She added that the recognition inspires them to continue advancing sustainable and inclusive child protection programs.

Cadiz Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. lauded Magsaysay officials and residents for their exemplary efforts in implementing programs focused on protecting children in the barangay.

“This accolade holds great significance for our city, as it underscores how our local government prioritizes children’s welfare,” Escalante said.

He emphasized that ensuring every barangay in Cadiz is a safe place for children is not merely a public service but a noble endeavor.

Earlier this year, Cadiz City also earned national recognition as one of the top four local governments in the component city category during the inaugural “Walang Gutom” Awards led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Cadiz’s entry, Project PAT-BAGSIK (Pagkaon Aton Tatapon-Bata Aton Giyahan sa Iya Kaalam), showcased a holistic approach to sustainable food security.

Dubbed a “womb-to-womb” initiative, Project PAT-BAGSIK highlights the city government’s efforts to provide comprehensive care for every Cadiznon, starting from conception through efficient government services.

This, as Escalante stressed : “Every child in Cadiz matters.”*
