Iloilo City is glowing once again with the Ilonggo Christmas Parol of Hope, as more than 1,000 giant star-shaped lanterns illuminate its major streets.

Now in its fourth year, the initiative has transformed key roads such as Ungka Jaro, Diversion Road, General Luna Street in the City Proper, and La Paz district into a festive display of warmth and cheer for the Christmas season.

The handmade lanterns were crafted by Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Iloilo City District Jail in Ungka, Jaro. The project is a collaboration with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) – Iloilo Chapter, which purchased the lanterns to support the initiative.

“The sight of beautiful and colorful parols along our major thoroughfares is something Ilonggos look forward to every Christmas season,” said Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon.

Ganzon noted that the Christmas lanterns symbolize hope and inspiration, not only for the community but especially for the PDLs.

“Through this project, we provide income opportunities to our brothers and sisters striving for second chances in life,” he added.

Jail Superintendent Richard Servano emphasized the value of the project in giving PDLs an avenue to showcase their talents while providing a dignified source of livelihood.

“Through this project, our PDLs were able to earn income and help their families, especially during this holiday season. This beacon of hope empowers them and gives them a sense of purpose and a chance to contribute meaningfully despite their current circumstances,” Servano said.

PCCI Iloilo has been spearheading the Parol of Hope initiative since 2019, although the program was paused for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Felix Tiu, chairman of PCCI Iloilo, said the lanterns symbolize the aspirations and resilience of the Ilonggo people, showcasing the power of hope even in challenging times.

“I hope this project will continue for the next decade,” Tiu said.

This year’s lanterns feature a vibrant color scheme of yellow and green, accented with red at the center, a change from last year’s rainbow theme. The new design aims to enhance the festive atmosphere throughout the city.
